A naked long position on a far Nifty or Bank Nifty strike can be restricted or need a lot of margin when placed on its own. Pairing it with an offsetting leg — placed together in a basket — lets the margin engine evaluate both legs as a hedge instead of a standalone speculative bet, which can bring the position within reach.
Why is a far strike restricted or expensive on its own?
A long option position that isn't offset by anything else is pure speculation from a risk standpoint, so it can be margined heavily or blocked outright if it falls outside what your account is cleared for. Once that same long leg is part of a recognized hedge — an offsetting position in a related contract — the combined exposure is lower, and margin (computed the standard SPAN + Exposure way used across the exchange) can drop enough to bring the trade within reach.
How do I set this up with a basket order?
1. Create a basket from Tools → Basket Order.
2. Add your hedge leg — an option or future position that offsets the long strike you actually want.
3. Add the long option on the strike you want, in the same basket.
4. Check the required and final margin shown for the basket before executing — the combined figure reflects the hedge benefit, not each leg priced in isolation.
5. Tap Execute to place both legs together.
Important: The order in which you add legs to the basket can affect the margin shown for each one as they execute in sequence — see What is the required and the final margin in a basket order?. Check the margin figures on your specific combination before executing, rather than assuming a fixed order works for every strategy.
Things to keep in mind
- This only works if the two legs form a genuine hedge — a random unrelated pair of orders in the same basket doesn't get the same margin treatment.
