Does the T+5 holding period include Saturday and Sunday?

No. T+5 lets you hold a position for up to 5 trading days, and Saturdays, Sundays and exchange holidays are not counted. Only days the market is open count toward the 5 days.

How are the 5 trading days counted?

Only trading days count. For example, if you buy on a Monday, the 5 trading days run Monday to Friday — the weekend is skipped. On the 6th trading day (the following Monday, if it is a working day), you must clear the debit or the position is squared off.

What happens on the 6th trading day?

On the 6th trading day you have three options:

  • Pay the full debit amount in your ledger (the position becomes a normal Delivery holding).
  • Square off the position by selling the shares.
  • Do nothing, and the system automatically squares off the position.
