Why is Margin Trading Facility (MTF) not allowed for some clients?

MTF isn't available to every client. Even an otherwise-eligible client needs DDPI and the NSE Equity segment active on their account before MTF can be enabled — and it isn't offered at all to NRI account holders, custodian-settled clients, or minors.

What account settings can block MTF, even for an eligible client?

  • DDPI not active. MTF shares are auto-pledged, and that pledge relies on DDPI being active on your account — without it, MTF can't be enabled. See How to activate DDPI (POA) for your demat account?
  • The NSE Equity segment isn't active on your account. MTF is offered within the equity segment, so that segment needs to be active before MTF can be.

Which clients can't use MTF at all?

  • NRI account holders — MTF isn't available on NRI accounts. See Can an NRI/NRO resident open an account? for what NRI accounts on Rupeezy can and can't do.
  • Custodian-settled clients — if your trades settle through a custodian rather than directly with Rupeezy, MTF isn't available, since it relies on Rupeezy holding and pledging the funded shares itself.
  • Minors — a minor can't buy shares at all under regulation, so MTF, a way of buying with financing, doesn't apply to them either. A minor's account can still sell existing holdings.
