Why does my P&L change after 3:30 PM?

After the market closes, your P&L on the Holdings and Positions pages switches from being calculated on the Last Traded Price (LTP) to the exchange's official closing price for the day. Because the closing price and the LTP can differ, your P&L can shift once this switch happens.

How that official closing price is set depends on the stock:

  • Stocks that have F&O contracts — from 3 August 2026, the closing price comes from the new Closing Auction Session (CAS), a short auction held from 3:15 to 3:30 PM after continuous trading. See What is the Closing Auction Session (CAS)?.
  • All other stocks — the closing price is the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of trades in the last 30 minutes of the session (3:00 PM to 3:30 PM), not just the last trade.

Why does this happen?

  • During market hours, your Holdings and Positions P&L is calculated using the LTP — the most recently traded price.
  • After the market closes, it switches to the exchange's official closing price for the day.
  • That closing price isn't simply the last trade — for most stocks it's the 3:00–3:30 PM VWAP, and for F&O stocks it's the CAS equilibrium price — so it can differ from the exact LTP at the close.

†For a stock that has F&O contracts, this is the CAS equilibrium price from the 3:15–3:30 PM auction (from 3 August 2026); the equity derivatives segment itself trades until 3:40 PM. For every other stock it's the 3:00–3:30 PM VWAP.
