How do bonus and stock split shares reflect in my account?

When you're eligible for a bonus issue or a stock split, the extra shares are credited directly to your demat account — you don't need to do anything. While they're being credited, your average price and P&L in the app may look wrong for a short while; this corrects itself once all the shares are in.

Do I need to do anything to receive them?

No. Bonus and split shares are credited automatically to your demat account — there's no order to place or request to make. Eligibility is decided by the ex-date (as with other corporate actions), so you need to be holding the shares on that date.

When will they arrive?

The shares may be credited all at once, or on separate days, depending on how the corporate action is processed. So you might see part of the quantity first and the rest a little later.

Why is my average price or P&L wrong during this time?

While the new shares are still being credited, the app is working with an in-between quantity, so your average buy price and P&L can show incorrectly for a short period. This is temporary and expected — it self-corrects automatically once all the units are received and the position is fully adjusted. Nothing is lost; the numbers just catch up.

Can I sell the bonus or split shares straight away?

Not until they're credited. You can only sell the units once they've actually arrived in your demat account. If part of the quantity hasn't been received yet, you can't sell that part.

Good to know

  • A bonus issue adds shares at no extra cost; a stock split increases your share count by reducing the face value. In both cases your total investment value doesn't change — only the number of shares and the per-share price do.
  • Cash payouts like dividends work differently — they're credited to your bank account, not your demat.
  • A buyback is another corporate action — an offer to sell your shares back to the company at a fixed price.
  • You can check upcoming bonus and split events (and their ex-dates) under Home → Tools → Corporate Action in the app.
